There’s no denying the popularity of online dating – but as anyone who’s tried it will tell you, you have to take the good with the bad. We’ve all heard the horror stories of the people who turn out to be nothing like their profiles suggest, the messages from people wanting just a casual hookup when you’re after long term commitment and those whose profiles could, quite frankly, do with a bit of work.  If you’re struggling to write your profile, here are 5 things to avoid for your best chance of dating success…

1. Be honest

Not TOO honest, though: nobody wants to read about any unsavoury habits you might have or your recurring ingrowing toenail. We’re talking about the basics: if a guy claims he’s a 6-footer when he’s really 5 foot 7, he’ll be found out on the first meeting. Similarly, if you use a picture that’s 10 years out of date, it’s not going to take long for the first person you meet to realise you’re not being completely truthful. Be honest, and you’re more likely to find someone who’s interested in the real you.

2. Avoid using cliches

Most people on dating sites seem to love snuggling on the sofa and watching the sun set and have the obligatory good sense of humour…talk about things that are unique to you so you stand out.

3. Don’t be negative

As much as past experience can leave you wanting to reel off a long list of what you’re NOT looking for in a partner, negativity can be a turn-off and could even scare potential matches away. Stick to talking about what you like and what you want – people love positivity.

4. Leave something to talk about

If you tell your whole life story in your profile, you’ll have nothing to talk about when it comes to the first date. You want your online dating profile to be a teaser that will leave matches asking for more.

5. Don’t sound too desperate

Sure, you may have been single for years and be desperate to settle down, but coming across in that way will send those looking at your profile running. Be relaxed, and just see what happens…
