WEEK 25 – THE 52 WEEK LOVE PROJECT
Welcome to Week 25 of The 52 Week Love Project – Acts of Kindness. The project designed to recognize 52 inspiring humans who are giving back to our community – whether in a small way or by creating a movement for change and inspiration.
The project will showcase LOVE at it’s finest, share their stories – what they do and why they do it! It’s an opportunity for us to find out what inspires them and what keeps them going when challenges or self-doubt assail them.
Meet Kathy – the Founder of ‘Moeloco’
Moeloco, is a social enterprise that works with the ‘Hope Foundation’ in Kolkata to help children in poverty by giving them the opportunity to dream by providing access to education. We do this through donating school shoes that allow the children to go to school and stay in school.
Kathy’s advise for those that want to create change in the world:
‘Hang out with others who also have big dreams and want to make a difference. The company you keep is very important and being amongst others like you will lift you and help your energy be where it needs to be for this journey of becoming a change maker.’
WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?
I felt this desire to help make a difference almost 3.5 years ago when I learnt the plight of these children. Knowing that there are over 300 hundred million children living in poverty without shoes and the consequences.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
We design and manufacture a rubber flip-flop that leaves positive messages in the sand such as
Live love – I Am grateful – Be Happy
For every pair sold we donate a pair of school shoes that we manufacture in India to a child in poverty for them to attend school.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU?
I cannot stand seeing injustice especially those involving children.
I’m sure it has something to do with I always wanted children but unfortunately I was unable to have my own and I have always been donating to children’s charities.
Whilst I was running my other businesses, I had always said one day I shall do something big to help children and I guess my one day arrived when an article about children with no shoes hit my desk! When I learnt about this situation.
I knew I could not sit by and that I must do something to help. I have always had a great life so it was my turn to do more.
HOW DO YOU GET PAST SELF DOUBT?
That is a great question. Self-doubt is something I now entertain instead of being in denial. It is a perfectly natural emotion and I realise it is Ok to have this but I do not let it rule me.
I see self-doubt as the bad cop that checks in on me, that I am very clear on my why and to see if I really am convinced I want to do something or not.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS WHO WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE/CHANGE IN THE WORLD?
Start small, do not get overwhelmed with how you can make a difference as every person doing something small adds up to something large. Do ensure though you are very clear on your why. This is what has kept me going especially during challenging times and those moments of self-doubt. Stick with your why, I love also referring to my vision board that sits on a wall in my office and as a pic on my phone.
Hang out with others who also have big dreams and want to make a difference. The company you keep is very important and being amongst others like you will lift you and help your energy be where it needs to be for this journey of becoming a changemaker.
DO YOU HAVE A QUOTE OR EXPRESSION THAT YOU LIVE BY?
Don’t do anything because you can’t do everything, do something, nothing is small.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO?
Recently I started a Web TV show called Crazy Dreamers TV where I have been travelling around the world for the last five months. During that time I have been interviewing other social entrepreneurs and those working in the sector to shine more light on the growing trend of businesses being deployed to create social impact.
Since starting Moeloco flip flops, I have also been building Moeloco youth which is a movement of teenagers committed to making a difference and learning about social enterprise. I strongly believe in youth leadership and empowerment as these are the future changemakers so at the moment I invest my time as a speaker and mentor to youth groups and their communities.
HOW CAN OTHERS HELP/GET INVOLVED?
With every pair of Flip Flops you purchase, we give a pair of school shoes to a child in poverty. One for one. You can purchase your Flip Flops here to make a difference.
