WEEK 27 – THE 52 WEEK LOVE PROJECT

Welcome to Week 27 of The 52 Week Love Project – Acts of Kindness. The project designed to recognize 52 inspiring humans who are giving back to our community – whether in a small way or by creating a movement for change and inspiration.

The project will showcase LOVE at it’s finest, share their stories – what they do and why they do it!  It’s an opportunity for us to find out what inspires them and what keeps them going when challenges or self-doubt assail them.

Meet Winsome – The creator of Heavenly Trimmings.

Her journey began when she decided to make craft good for special needs children and make a positive difference in the world. When I asked what advice she has for others that wanted to make a difference int he world, this is what she said:

‘Love others, as you would want others to love you. Every act of love, even the very small ones, changes the world. Together we can make a difference! Even if it’s one smile at a time 🙂 Don’t wait for someone else to do something. Be the one to do something.’

WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?

It all began in 2015 when I decided to use my craft making talents to good use to: bless other special needs children like my son Noah; and to make a positive difference in the world for God.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

I hand make bows (headbands/clips) and badges and gift them to children/teens/young adults (ages from new born-21, worldwide) with life debilitating illnesses and also to their siblings. I also organise the annual Christmas Drive, whereby around 30 blessing bags, which contain various goodies, are gifted to 30 children at Monash Children’s Hospital on Christmas Eve.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU?

When I see how my son Noah and other kids like him battle their illness(es) with such tremendous courage, I am inspired and motivated to bless them. That is what I try my best to do via Heavenly Trimmings. Being able to champion for disadvantaged children.

HOW DO YOU GET PAST SELF DOUBT?

Initially, creating Heavenly Trimmings was like entering uncharted waters for me, as I had never had experience with creating a business/organisation.

The initial doubt of thinking if we would make a difference was immediately overthrown once I saw how the bows/badges brought joy to courageous children and their families.

Heavenly Trimmings is an expression of my genuine love for these courageous children and I believe that anything done in love will always be well received.

Over time due to unforeseen circumstances such as Noah’s hospitalisations/ our growing family. I did doubt if I could find the time to maintain Heavenly trimming’s activities. However, we have created a loving “tribe” of followers and supporters who understand that family comes first. So, when things get busy with family life, I have learnt to take things at my own pace so that I can still be there for my family. I have learnt not to put any unnecessary pressure on myself and to be content with the fact that “my best” is enough.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS WHO WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE/CHANGE IN THE WORLD?

Love others, as you would want others to love you. Every act of love, even the very small ones, changes the world. Together we can make a difference! Even if it’s one smile at a time 🙂 Don’t wait for someone else to do something. Be the one to do something.

DO YOU HAVE A QUOTE OR EXPRESSION THAT YOU LIVE BY?

“Different is not less.” This expression is to encourage others to learn to truly see courageous children for who they are; and that children are not defined by their medical conditions.

“We are all created for a purpose” Each one of us has something to offer the world and God has a plan for each of our lives.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO?

In addition to Heavenly Trimmings, I am also involved in supporting Bolivian Youth Ministries, which is a Christian organisation that runs a girls orphanage in Bolivia. Our family also sponsors 4 children: 1 through The School of St. Jude in Tanzania and 3 through Compassion in Rwanda, Guatemala and Bolivia. I am a pharmacist by profession.
