WEEK 3 – THE 52 WEEK LOVE PROJECT
Welcome to Week 3 of The 52 Week Love Project. The project designed to recognize 52 inspiring humans who are giving back to our community – whether in a small way or by creating a movement for change and inspiration.
The project will showcase LOVE at it’s finest, share their stories – what they do and why they do it! It’s an opportunity for us to find out what inspires them and what keeps them going when challenges or self-doubt assail them.
MEET: Alyx – Cancer Survivor and Inventor
WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?
’13 years ago I had Breast Cancer! The chemo treatments caused hideous side effects that affected my appetite and my ability to take in food – which lead me to become malnourished. On the whole chemo treatment was made considerably worse due to the inability to consume normal food.’
‘At the time, it didn’t occur to me that it would be affecting others that were undergoing chemo treatments. It was a few years later that I heard other people experienced the same issues that I faced and were suffering from malnutrition. It was then that I decided to take action.’
WHAT DO YOU DO?
‘With an understanding of side effects caused by chemo and knowing that those undergoing treatment had the inability to simply enjoy the act of eating, it was no longer an option for me not do something about it.
I was in the fortunate position, with so many side-effects from my treatment that I had a deep awareness of what type of textures would benefit those that were going through chemo. I spent a considerable time investigating what was currently in the market and decided to get insights from nutritionists and food scientists.
It took a while to get the core products right. I have dropped and swapped out some of the range until I found what works. Some of the products are a little less known.
The main products we have at Kee-moh Snacks are protein powders, chia pudding, overnight oats, protein ball mix – all with high nutrient value but in small servings.
All our products are clean and protein rich.’
WHAT INSPIRED YOU?
My own journey and the understanding and frustrations that others were experiencing the same issues. ‘Just because you have cancer does not mean you shouldn’t have to eat!’
HOW DO YOU GET PAST SELF DOUBT?
‘When I hear about how our products have helped other people – it motivates me. I still doubt myself business wise’.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS THAT WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
‘Just start! Have visibility, start talking to people, create connections.’
DO YOU HAVE A QUOTE OR EXPRESSION THAT YOU LIVE BY?
‘THINK BIG, DREAM BIG, BE BIGGER – THE UNIVERSE IS GENEROUS!’
HOW CAN OTHER HELP?
‘If you know someone that has cancer, they may not be aware of the options available to them when it comes to other food options‘
