WEEK 4 – THE 52 WEEK LOVE PROJECT

Welcome to Week 4 of The 52 Week Love Project. The project designed to recognize 52 inspiring humans who are giving back to our community – whether in a small way or by creating a movement for change and inspiration.

The project will showcase LOVE at it’s finest, share their stories – what they do and why they do it!  It’s an opportunity for us to find out what inspires them and what keeps them going when challenges or self-doubt assail them.

MEET: Kate -Pinchapoo Founder & One of the Biggest ‘not for profit’ personal hygiene providers for those in need.

WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?

‘As a teenage girl, I fled home due to escalating domestic violence where I came close to losing my life.  In the heat of the moment when I was leaving, the only thing that I thought to take with me was my toothbrush – I always felt better after brushing my teeth.  Surprisingly everything you think you will do/take, it’s not what happens when instinct kicks in.

It wasn’t long before that I needed the simple things we take for granted. I was in survival mode for a very long time and went through years of post-traumatic trauma.

Several years later, I was away for the weekend with my husband and I had pinched the hotel toiletries (as everyone does). Not long after, in the shower one night and in my darkest state, it was like a lightning bolt that went through me – I wondered how many other people take their hotel toiletries!

Instantly I came up with the name Pinchapoo – and came running out of the shower screaming PINCHAPOO PINCHAPOO! Explaining the concept to my husband –  encourage others to take their hotel toiletries to donate them to those suffering from family violence and homelessness.  Her husband’s response:  ‘It’s a great idea but I don’t think you can call it that’.’

That’s when Pinchapoo was born :).

WHAT DO YOU DO?

‘We tried to make a movement by encouraging friends and family that travelled regularly to take their hotel toiletries.  You pay for them anyway. This soon spread to others that were taking their hotel toiletries and donated them’.

1.7 million little bottles later and now Pinchapoo is one of the biggest ‘not for profit’ personal hygiene providers for anyone in need.

Pinchapoo works with 123 organizations to assist with supplies for those that are homeless, suffering from domestic violence, jails, refugees, crisis relief and aboriginal health.’

Kate said they have created a culture around the brand – cheeky out of the box, not for profit that drives their messages through fun and collaboration.  ‘There is no grey area for us – if you pinch one bottle it washes one person’s head!  ‘It’s a great way to help when you can’t contribute financially.’

And if you think the hotels are in up-roar – think again!  They are backing Pinchapoo and awarded them the ‘Best Global Hotel Innovation Award in 2017’!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU?

Kate said: ‘There were three things that inspired me, two conventional and one unconventional’:

1.’I have always wanted to be an example for my kids – the obvious one.

2. ‘To help other people in situations like I was in. People say to me,  ‘you know that you are not going to change the world’.  I’m not focusing on changing the world, the focus is on changing one person’s world.  Give someone the self-worth, self-respect of personal hygiene and enhance their ability to connect with the world – in whatever capacity it is’.  That is the beginning of all journeys.

3. Unconventional – ‘I’m still driven to prove to my parents that I am better than what they expected me to be. Right or wrong – it still fuels me. We all have bad days – but nice to go – I’m not going to quit. Unapologetic about it in every arena. I like to prove people wrong.’

HOW DO YOU GET PAST SELF DOUBT?

I think from years of being full of self-doubt – you can train your mind to be mentally fit and keeping it real. There are days that you say are you kidding yourself – then the fitness part of your brain kicks in, everything you have every achieved started with the same thought process.

‘Mental fitness and surround yourself with the people that give you the reason why you can! You need someone to say ‘bullshit – you can do that’, sometimes you need to be slapped out of it’.

‘I am incredibly privileged to do what I do on a daily basis.  The madness, culture and what I get surrounded by every day, I think I am so grateful for my journey that it has led me to where I am today.’

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS THAT WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

‘Don’t try to change the world, just try to change someone’s world!’ It’s as simple as knocking on someone’s door that you know is lonely to see if they would like to have a cup of tea’.

‘We all have the capacity to give, no matter what the situation is that you are in’.

DO YOU HAVE A QUOTE OR EXPRESSION THAT YOU LIVE BY?

‘Your candle does not shine brighter by putting someone else’s out’

‘We are so quick to judge others, put people in categories just to make us feel better about ourselves. So important to remain grounded. Light other people up not put them down’.

HOW CAN OTHER HELP?

  • A thousand different ways:  volunteer, pinch, organize a collection/ fundraiser and tell others about us!
