WEEK 3 – THE 52 WEEK LOVE PROJECT

Welcome to Week 11 of The 52 Week Love Project. The project designed to recognize 52 inspiring humans who are giving back to our community – whether in a small way or by creating a movement for change and inspiration.

The project will showcase LOVE at it’s finest, share their stories – what they do and why they do it!  It’s an opportunity for us to find out what inspires them and what keeps them going when challenges or self-doubt assail them.

MEET: KAY

This is her motto:

GEM – Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness

(enjoy the moment right now and take the opportunities when they come along).

WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?

‘Having just retired I have been looking for a worthwhile purpose and when our eldest son Paul (39) was tragically killed in 2014, our family decided to honour his memory with a trust fund.

We all felt that Pauls memory would be best served by supporting others.  Paul would always give away his last dollar, help out his mates, or anyone else who needed a hand. Paul was one of the most positive, and active young men I have known.

My purpose became much clearer as time went on and to recover from Pauls death I put my energies into working on the business to benefit the Memorial Trust Fund.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

‘I run a consultancy business called KV Consultancy, for woman in small based business, woman in the community and young woman via school programs and talks.  I work to help them plan, develop and look for opportunities within their field and run an appreciation marketing business that generates the funds for our family trust to operate.’

‘This has allowed us to set up an educational fund for young adults who wished to return to education but do not have the financial capacity to pay for their educational fees, books etc. We set this up with the Narre Community Learning Centre, who run an advanced program for disengaged young adults.’

WHAT INSPIRED YOU?

‘I undertook a program called Leadership Victoria and am part of the Victoria Women’s Honour Roll Ambassador program. These programs and the involvement with some outstanding leaders, made me realise that money wasn’t the key to happiness and fulfilment.  That having a purpose and making a difference was far more rewarding.  I believe in appreciation and gratitude and I am extremely grateful for what I have achieved in my life.  I wanted to make a difference in my own backyard and work with young woman in business and also new mums at home to make a difference.’

HOW DO YOU GET PAST SELF DOUBT?

The simpler the idea the better it works. I work with the local community group Narre Community Learning Centre who handles all the paperwork and organisation of the awards. They have the taxation status and I am just in the background providing the funds.  Keep it simple.

With the business KV Consultancy, I work with local woman’s networks and provide my services free to many woman who currently do not have the capacity to pay.  If they do have the capacity, then the funds go into the trust fund for the Memorial trust.

I was also part of Breastfeed Australia for many years, supporting young mums with new babies.’

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS THAT WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

‘Pick something that you have an interest in and that you feel passionate about.  Make sure you ask for feedback as to how your funds are being invested and always have an out clause if you need to make changes due to your own circumstances.  Set out very clear guidelines as to how you want your money spent and keep a timeline check on how things are going.  Establish strong relationships with the organisation you are involved with.’

DO YOU HAVE A QUOTE OR EXPRESSION THAT YOU LIVE BY?

I work on GEM – Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (enjoy the moment right now and take the opportunities when they come along).

WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO?

‘I work and mentor businesswoman, through the Victorian Woman’s Honour Role to provide a number of support services to young woman starting up businesses.  I work one on one with many of them to identify their opportunities, map out their life skills, and mind map business growth.

I speak with local women’s groups and schools to help young woman gain confidence and mentor them at different year levels.’

HOW CAN OTHER HELP?

‘Each year we endeavour to get one younger adult student into education, so a donation towards the school fees would be fantastic.

Send a Card:   Each card sent, the money I make goes back to the trust fund towards the educational expenses. Anyone can send a card and experience it for FREE.

The cards cost approx.. $2.75US and $1.00 postage which is cheaper than most picture cards in the shops. Many businesses use this tool to keep in touch with their customers and provide a tangible touch point.’
